The Berwick campus was built on the old Casey airfield, reportedly the site of the first sport parachuting jump in Victoria in 1968. The airfield was established in 1938 and was privately owned by Lord Richard Gardiner Casey, Governor General of Australia 1965-1969.
In 2008 there were 1100 Monash graduates listed among the 13,200 biographies of Australia's most notable individuals in Who's Who in Australia. This is a considerable proportion (8.33 per cent) for a university that celebrated its 50th anniversary that year.
In 1977 Monash engineers developed a method of simulating complex fluid behaviours leading to applications in cinema special effects. This technique was used in such box office hits as Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
Monash has received Employer of Choice for Women accreditation each year since the awards were introduced in 2001. To be recognised employers are required to meet stringent criteria including ensuring the percentage of female managers is the same or greater than 28 per cent.
Monash has a stormwater harvesting project in the engineering precinct at the Clayton campus that saves more than 2.4 Olympic-sized swimming pools of potable water per annum. The project allows for the collection of more than five million litres of water a year for use as cooling water, toilet flush, cooling tower makeup and irrigation.
