One in four Victorian applicants have placed Monash University as their university of first choice for study in 2010.

New Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) data showed 24.4 per cent of total university applicants had this year placed a Monash University course as their first preference.

Over the past four years there has been a 33 per cent increase in first-preference demand for courses at Monash University. In 2006 the University received 11,388 first preference applications through VTAC. This year that number is 15,175. Demand has increase by 11.6 percent or an extra 1488 first preference selections since last year.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Adam Shoemaker said Monash University was the most popular of any Victorian university.

"Students recognise the benefits of a Monash University degree and the diversity of educational offerings available at Monash - the strong emphasis on double degrees, course flexibility, wide subject choice and an early focus on career-orientated education," Professor Shoemaker said.

"Strong demand for Monash University courses is also a stamp of approval for the Monash Passport and its emphasis on early research and honours programs, as well as international study and volunteering opportunities."

Professor Shoemaker said there had been strong growth on last year's first preference selections across most faculties.

Highlights included:

  • Law, 25.2 per cent,
  • Pharmacy, 20.6 per cent,
  • Arts, 18.9 per cent, and
  • Science 15.8 per cent.

Monash University was ranked 45 in the world in the most recent Times Higher Education Supplement rankings. Established in 1958, it is one of the youngest universities to feature in the world's top 50.

The University has campuses based around Melbourne, as well as regional Victoria, Malaysia and South Africa. Construction of a PhD-focused research academy in Mumbai, India is currently underway.
