Monash attracts over $1.4 million to build healthy partnerships

Three researchers from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and the Monash University Accident Research Centre at Monash University have attracted a total of $1,473,240 from the Rudd Government's first ever round of national Partnerships for Better Health Grants.

This new funding scheme, announced by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), assists researchers to work directly with health organisations to achieve research outcomes can be applied directly to real challenges faced by the community.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Edwina Cornish was extremely pleased with the outcome of this new round of research funding.

"Monash led the state of Victoria in this round of funding, which is an admirable result," Professor Cornish said.

"This success is confirmation of Monash University's continual pursuit in working with government and health organisations to provide outcomes that will benefit the community."

The following Monash researchers were successful in attracting Partnerships for Better Health Grants:

  • Professor John McNeil from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine was awarded $900,000 and will work in partnership with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and the Victorian Government Department of Human Services to address the gaps in understanding in relation to transfusion medicine.
  • Dr Lesley Day from the Monash University Accident Research Centre will use her grant of $400,000 to collaborate with the University of Ballarat, Latrobe University, the National Ageing Research Institute and the University of Sydney to target state wide strategies in Victoria for preventing falls among older people living in community dwellings.
  • Associate Professor Karin Leder from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine attracted a total of $173,240 to establish Australian health based targets for microbial water quality. Associate Professor Leder will partner with Water Quality Research Australia Limited, New South Wales Health, Water Services Association of Australia, Department of Health, South Australia and Water Futures Pty Ltd to address this issue.
