Monash researchers awarded top fellowship

23 April 2009

Three researchers from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences have been awarded prestigious 2009 Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative Fellowships by the Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings.

The fellowships geared towards early-career researchers aim to support researchers who show great promise in the early stages of their research careers.

Dr Nicole Bye and Dr Edwin Yan, from the Faculty's Department of Medicine at the Alfred Hospital both attracted Early Career Research Fellowships equating to $326,270 each, which will support their research for the next three years.

Dr Alistair Nichol from the Faculty's Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine received an Early Career Practitioner Fellowship to the value of $163,135 which will fund Dr Nichol's research on a part-time basis.

  • Dr Bye will research how to promote the growth of new nerve cells after traumatic brain injury using a novel combination of proteins.
  • Dr Yan's research will focus on biochemical brain responses following traumatic brain injury in order to develop better approaches to minimise further brain damage and neurological impairment.
  • Dr Nichol will conduct a clinical trial of early hyperthermia, or lowered temperature after traumatic brain injury to minimise further brain damage.

The Monash researchers received three out of the five fellowships awarded by the Victorian State Government.
