The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, Professor Adam Shoemaker,said the thoughts of Monash staff and students were with the parents of missing student Akshay Miranda.
Akshay, 22, and his 24-year-old brother Ashish, were holidaying with their parents when they were crushed by ice on the Fox glacier in New Zealand on Thursday.
Professor Shoemaker said Akshay was to finish a five-year double-degree at Monash University this year.
"Akshay was studying mechanical engineering and science and was an outstanding student. He had a bright future in front of him. It is an absolute tragedy that this has happened. On behalf of the University I offer our condolences to Akshay's parents," Professor Shoemaker said.
The Dean of Engineering at Monash, Professor Tam Sridhar, said Akshay was a popular student who showed a lot of promise as a mechanical engineer. He also loved sport and had a wide circle of friends at the Clayton campus.
"Our thoughts are with the Miranda family at this time of great loss," Professor Sridhar said.
