Director of Research at the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health and Head of Diabetes at Southern Health, Professor Helena Teede has received recognition by the National Health and Medical Research Council for her outstanding contribution to key national health priority areas and conditions of major public health significance.
Professor Helena Teede, who holds the Jean Hailes Chair for Women's Health at Monash University, received an NHMRC Achievement Award for career development at a ceremony in Canberra.
Professor Teede focused her work on the prevention of chronic disease starting with poor lifestyle choices, through to obesity, insulin resistance (and insulin resistant syndromes such as polycystic ovary syndrome), prediabetes, diabetes and heart disease. Her research team also focused on midlife health and menopause.
Professor Teede said she was passionate about the health of the community through prevention of disease and best practice in clinical management.
"We look forward to continuing to contribute to improved health outcomes for Australians through leading edge research, best practice clinical care and practical health education opportunities," Professor Teede said.
"We are immensely proud of Professor Teede's achievements," said Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health Director Janet Michelmore AO. "This award is recognition of the importance of improving women's health by focusing on prevention at a population level."
The awards are designed to show the NHMRC's appreciation to the research and ethics community for their considerable scientific research, innovation and leadership. Established in 2007, these awards recognise outstanding Australians for their contributions and achievements in health and medical research.
This year's NHMRC Achievement Awards have been presented to seven outstanding researchers across NHMRC's grant and fellowship schemes following the outcome of the 2008 peer review process.
