Monash University's Faculty of Art and Design is hosting a new exhibition showcasing 40 years of German video art.
The exhibition, organised by Professor Claudia Terstappen in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Australia, traces the artistic evolution of video art from its very beginnings through to today.
The works offer an overview on historical as well as current tendencies in video art, including the early beginnings in film and television.
The project features 59 individual art works produced in Germany between 1963 and 2004, revealing the development of the genre from monitor presentations to complex installations.
Video art is best described as images captured on video but its creativity differentiates from cinema or television and other technologically created moving images because it does not require the formalities of a plot, actors or sequence of events.
Video works include artists such as Rebecca Horn, Valie Export, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic/Ulay, Katharina Sieverding, Klaus vom Bruch, Jeanne Faust, Dieter Kiessling, Ulrike Rosenbach and Ingo Guenther.
40 Years of Video Art, (The German) Digital Heritage Exhibition runs from 27 August to 26 September 2008.
