Unlocking the secrets of global seed vault

25 August 2008

One of the key people behind the creation of a massive underground seed bank is addressing a Monash University lecture in Melbourne this Wednesday.

Dr Cary Fowler is the Executive Director of Global Crop Diversity Trust, which helped create the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway.

He will reveal how a rescue mission is underway as thousands of scientists, plant breeders, farmers, and those working with the trust identify and save as many distinct crop varieties as possible.

Growing evidence suggests climate change could seriously threaten agricultural production and the diversity of crops around the world. The opening of the Vault deep inside an Arctic mountain earlier this year marked a turning point to ensuring the crops that sustain us will not be lost.

What: Dr Cary Fowler to address Monash University forum as part of Research Month.

Where: Village Roadshow Theatrette, State Library of Victoria, Corner of Swanston and La Trobe Streets (Entrance 3, Latrobe Street), Melbourne

When: 6-7 pm, Wednesday 27 August, 2008
