Law student wins Corrs award

A Monash law student's research paper on the morals and ethics involved in legislating human cloning has received a one-off prize of $5,000 from Melbourne law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

Ms Wendy Lee was presented the Corrs Prize of $5,000 by Mr Phil Catania,the partner-in-charge of Corrs' Melbourne office.

The prize was awarded for The Appropriateness of Moral or EthicalConsiderations in Legislating New Technologies submitted by Ms Lee based on her LLB Honours research paper.

Ms Lee's paper focused on overturning the ban on therapeutic cloning. Atthe time she was writing the essay, two pieces of legislation were before Federal Parliament as part of the Lockhart Review on human cloning.

She will take her Articles at law firm Mallesons and Stephen Jaquesstarting in March.

The Faculty was also awarded a cash sum of $5,000. Acting Dean ProfessorH.P. Lee attended the presentation.

"The Faculty is extremely delighted at the award," Professor Lee said.

"The judges who selected Wendy's paper were very impressed by the qualityand clarity of her discussion of its subject matter."

Ms Lee was one of three undergraduate winners in the annual essaycompetition, which was established by Corrs to explore thinking on important legal issues facing Australian business.
