Monash University is coming to the aid of families in rural communities by offering bursaries to high-achieving secondary school students aiming for a career in law.
Monash's Law School is offering eight rural bursaries for students commencing an undergraduate Law degree or double degree with Law in 2008.
Dean of Law, Professor Arie Freiberg said many of the University's best students have come from rural or isolated areas.
"As there is an increasing shortage of lawyers in rural areas, Monash Law School is aiming to address this issue by assisting potential rural law students who would otherwise find the move to Melbourne to study an expensive option," Professor Freiberg said.
"A law degree is a valuable asset, providing a solid foundation for many career options. Monash offers choices such as studying law from the first year, doing a combined degree or studying law after completing another degree."
To be eligible for the $3,500 bursary, students must be offered a place in an undergraduate course offered by the Faculty of Law at Monash, either as a single or double degree and must meet the rural criteria.
Undergraduate recruitment coordinator Hemant Kokularupan will visit senior schools in Bendigo and Macedon Ranges to provide more information on the Law School and rural bursaries on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 September.
Monash has one of the largest and most prestigious law schools in Australia providing legal education and training to over 2700 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In Victoria alone, Monash law graduates hold some of the most senior judicial positions in this State including the Chief Justice of Victoria, the Chief Magistrate of Victoria, Chief Judge of the County Court, President of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Chief Magistrate of the Victorian Children's Court, as well as the Victorian Solicitor-General and State Coroner.
As one of Australia's leading Group of Eight (Go8) universities, Monash is Australia's largest and most internationalised research-intensive university.
