Professor Peter Vulcan was the Director of the Monash University Accident Research Centre from its foundation in 1987 until mid-1998. Previously he was Chairman of the Victorian Road Safety and Traffic Authority for seven years and before that Assistant Secretary (Road Safety) in the Federal Department of Transport. His responsibilities in both these positions included road safety publicity and education. Peter was a member of the Australian Advisory Committee on Road Trauma which advises the Federal Ministers for Transport and Health on road safety. Peter has been involved in a wide range of road safety projects including advice to the Federal Office of Road Safety, several Australian States, New Zealand, China and Cyprus.
Peter is a mechanical engineering graduate from Melbourne University, with a Ph.D. in Biomechanics from Wayne State University, Michigan. He has been involved in road safety for over 30 years. In 1996 he was presented with a Special Award of Appreciation for outstanding leadership in motor vehicle safety by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and he was awarded the International Distinguished Career Award by the American Public Health Association (Injury Control Section).
