Ian Johnston became Director of the Monash University Accident Research Centre in May 2001 and retired in December 2006. He remains at MUARC in a part-time research and advisory role. Throughout the 1990s Ian was Managing Director of ARRB Transport Research.  Before that he was a researcher and program administrator in road safety with the Australian federal government (1972 - 1979), Chief Scientist (Human Factors) at ARRB (1979 - 1984) and Director, Road Safety for the Government of Victoria (1984 - 1989). Ian is a psychologist with a PhD in human factors, with over 35 years experience in the transport safety field. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, an Associate Editor of the international journal Accident Analysis and Prevention, and Past-President and Life Member of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia. Ian's research interest is in how innovation in injury prevention does or doesn't find its way into public policy and practice.
