World's Biggest Morning Tea
Around 60 people attended, raising more than $300. Rebecca Stewart who coordinated the event said it was great to see such a large number of staff willing to donate their time and money so generously. Even though Rebecca has now left the University, she has extended thanks to all those who contributed the delicious cakes, chocolates and food for their colleagues to enjoy. The morning tea is a great opportunity for people to meet and get to know each other and apparently some excellent chefs were unearthed, providing delicious chocolate mousse and home made muffins. Celebration of Life Service for John White
John's wife Kathy, together with their children, Michelle, Sue, Paul and Tony, joined with many of John's friends and colleagues from Monash. Deputy Chancellor, Paul Ramler reflected on his memories of working with John, describing his commitment to the university. "He was a man with strong family values who made many friends - with staff and students alike - during his 36 years in academia." Andrew O'Brien, Campus Life CEO also shared his memories of John, which began when he became a student of the university. "My role in the student union brought me into close contact with John, who was always interested in students' views. John was a friend, a mentor and a father figure to me and many others at Monash." Other colleagues who shared their memories of John included Peter Marshall (Vice-President Administration), Helen Dunne, Christel Kent and Julie Baxter.
(Our friend and colleague John White) New Team Member at Monash Sport
At Monash, Caroline provides administration and funding support to the campus’s sporting clubs, organises social sport on campus, coordinates inter-university sport and works within the project teams that organise Monash’s involvement in community sporting events – such as the Melbourne Marathon and Around the Bay in a Day. Caroline said Monash Sport generally tries to make sport on campus as good as possible. “We offer Monash sporting clubs free access to Chisholm Hall for training and competition and subsidised use of fax and photocopy facilities which helps all clubs, especially the smaller ones that just don’t have the funds for these sorts of things,” Caroline said. “We support the clubs as best we can, which includes workshops on how they can develop their club, how a committee works, how to market themselves, that sort of thing." “Sport is a really important part of the university experience for many staff and students, so the more people we can get involved, the better sport on campus will be.” Caroline is hoping to organise more social sport on campus during the year, including soccer at lunchtimes during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. To find out more about getting involved in a sports club, social sport or community sporting events visit www.sport.monash.edu.au or contact Caroline on x32520.
(Catherine Cooksley - new team member of Monash Sport) Drop-in Flu Clinic
The flu is a viral infection that is easily spread from person to person. The symptoms include fever, headache and aching muscles and may require a minimum of one week off work. The flu vaccine does not prevent all coughs, colds and viruses, but it does offer protection against the new strains of influenza virus. Being immunised gives you the best chance of not catching the flu – and not passing it on.
