Campus Nurse
Report
A
constant supply of energy to the body will ensure that your metabolism
stays up and running.
If your body has gone for a while without food, your metabolism will
slow down as it thinks it is going into starvation. This means it will
burn less energy. This is what happens when you decide to go on a
'diet' that involves strict food reduction, or do not 'break the fast'
(breakfast) after your nights sleep.
It is more beneficial to your health to eat 5-6 small meals and snacks
per day, or eat something every 3 hours.
However, be careful not to add in snacks and still consume large meals,
as your overall energy intake will increase and this can lead to weight
gain. For example, have a piece of fruit or a tub of yoghurt between
breakfast
and lunch, and lunch and dinner. Make breakfast and lunch the bigger
meals for the day, and your smallest meal is the night time meal. A
large meal at night time means that you do not have enough 'activity'
left in the day to burn off extra energy intake (calories/kilojoules).
If you would like to no more about nutrition, consider an appointment
with Lucy the Dietitian at Monash Caulfield Health Service. Speak to
the medical reception staff (9903 1177) and ask about appointment
availability and costs.
