 Welcome Breakfast & Orientation Ceremony

A warm morning ensured a good attendance at the Welcome Breakfast and Orientation Ceremony on Wednesday 23 February 2005.  Students and staff enjoyed a complimentary breakfast of fresh seasonal fruits and mini muffins and Danishes, courtesy of Campus Management - Caulfield.  Entertainment this year included a jazz trio and once again Tim Wilson (past Student President) excelled in his role as roving reporter, interviewing and welcoming new students.

Caulfield Campus International Women's Day Lunch

International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Caulfield campus yesterday, with the campus holding its ninth annual lunch to celebrate the event.Close to 200 people enjoyed food and wine plus entertainment by well-known Melbourne singer and comedienne Ms Wendy Little, who also works and studies at Monash.  Ms Little entertained the enthusiastic crowd with observations and songs about work, motherhood and ageing. A Monyx off-campus liaison officer based at The Alfred hospital, she also told the audience that “$20,000 and 12 units later” she would graduate in June with a masters in management.

One of the lunch organisers, Community Services manager Ms Suzanne Wolf, said the annual event had grown more popular each year since it started at the Caulfield campus in 1997.  “Our first lunch, held in the Clayfield Room on campus, only had about 50 people. But each year word spreads, and we will probably need to look for a bigger venue next year,” she said.

get ACCTIVE - Next 10,000 Steps Challenge

Are you and 9 colleagues up to the next Challenge?

The get ACCTIVE team is excited to launch the Autumn Challenge “Australias Bicentennial National Trail.” If you missed out on the first Monash University Caulfield campus, 10,000 Steps Challenge, get involved
in this one – “Australias Bicentennial National Trail” - a virtual walk from Cooktown in Northern Queensland down to Healesville in Victoria, which commences on Sunday 20 March and concludes on Saturday 28 May, 2005. The walk stops at Healesville so this time the winning team will be the first one to reach Healesville.

The Monash 10,000 Steps Challenge involves teams of 10 individuals one of whom is Captain.  Participants commit to walk, on average, 10,000 steps a day. The figure of 10,000 steps is based on adding a 30-minute walk to normal daily activities at the office or home. By using a pedometer the daily
steps are counted and logged onto a web based on-line Step Log.

Once again we are looking for people who can rise to the challenge of being Participants and/or Team Captains. The Team Captain provides their team with leadership, encouragement and enthusiasm. It is the Team Captain’s role to monitor their team’s progress, ensure team members are recording their daily step totals on the challenge map and to work with the team to reach their goal.

There will be prizes for the team and the individual who walks the greatest number of steps. But every participant will be rewarded with increased energy, reduced stress, and an increase in all aspects of health and well-being.

Registration is only $10.00 per person!! The first 100 to pay their registration will receive a Monash Sport drink bottle and a complimentary pass to the Fitness Centre. During this 10 week virtual walk, the get ACCTIVE group is also pleased to offer weekly, fully supervised workout sessions at the Caulfield Fitness Centre (numbers limited) and fortnightly health and
lifestyle classes.

The Australias Bicentennial National Trail will be launched on Tuesday 15 March at 9.45 a.m. in the Clayfield Room, refreshments provided. Come along, hear a bit more about the Challenge, register for the Challenge, hear from our panel including Tom Jepson, a Monash University triathlete, Judy Evans, the campus nurse, Melissa Latu-Lutui, Fitness Centre Manager and Gail Pizzi, “token bad walking person!” Two styles of pedometers priced at $32.00 and $18.50 will be available to purchase (cash only – correct money would be appreciated) at the launch.

If you would like to register as a team captain and/or participant in the Challenge, please contact Gail Pizzi of the Health Service, via email: gail.pizzi@adm.monash.edu.au Please note we are restricting
the teams to teams of 10 individuals this time around. If you would like to participate and are not a member of a team, please advise Gail Pizzi and she can place you on a team of like-minded people.  Registration and payment for the Challenge to Gail no later than Friday 18 March, 2005. If you are
registering as a Team Captain, there will be a Team Captain’s meeting on Wednesday 16 March between 12.00 and 1.00 p.m. (byo lunch) – venue to be advised at the Launch.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE - WALK IT – to a healthier body, mind and workplace!!

Monash University Careers and Employment will shortly host a brand new career event for first and second year students! Career Orientation Day has been created to enhance Monash University students’ employability by involving them in workplace skills development activities throughout their time at University.

30 organisations will gather at Monash University (Clayton) on Tuesday 15 March, to talk informally with students about the value of skills development and volunteering programs in preparing them for professional life.

By highlighting the importance of ongoing workplace skills development and practice, we hope not only to boost the employability of our students, but cement Monash’s position as a University of choice for employers seeking high quality employment candidates for employment.

Participants include non-profit organisations, workplace skills development programs like YAA and HEWSO, volunteer groups, Monash businesses and campus-based clubs and societies. First and second year students from all campuses are encouraged to attend and we would welcome staff’s assistance in promoting the event to relevant student groups.

Massage News!

ATTENTION MASSAGE CLIENTS!

As many of you are aware, I have a wrist injury and have not been able to
work for over a month. I was hoping to recover quickly but it has now become
apparent that I will need surgery and will not be returning to work for a
few months.

I have recruited two ladies to keep the massage service going while I am
incapacitated and appointments are now available Monday, Tuesday and Friday. I look forward to returning later in the year and I thank Pauli and Alex for helping me out in the meantime.

Graduate Careers Fairs 2005

The Graduate Careers Fairs will be held on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 March 2005 (12.00noon – 3.30pm) in the Recreation Hall, Sports & Recreation Centre, Clayton Campus.

Monash University Careers and Employment is gearing up to host Graduate Careers Fairs 2005, its major on-campus career events for final year students. This year’s events will be held at the Clayton campus on Wednesday 16 March (for Business, Commerce, Economics, Arts and Law disciplines) and Thursday 17 March (for Engineering, Computing/IT and Science).

Students about to enter the graduate labour market should take this opportunity to meet a wide range of prospective employers on campus, find out about graduate jobs for 2006 and investigate the recruitment process.

95 organisations will participate over the two days, representing both private and public sectors, across a diverse range of industries. The Fairs will be delivered in ‘expo’ format and as a new feature in 2005, several visiting employers will offer free job seeker workshops on preparing, applying for and securing graduate employment.

In previous years there has been a fantastic attendance at these events – over 5,000 students in 2004 alone – and we are keen to see this continue. Final year students from all campuses are encouraged to attend, and we welcome staff’s assistance in promoting the events to relevant student groups.

Students can access details of all the participating organisations at http://careers.monash.edu.au – click on ‘Search for Jobs’ and check the links on the news page once you login. Others should contact Gilda Moss for details, by emailing gilda.moss@adm.monash.edu.au .

Caulfield Profiles

This month we feature Helen Cridland of Monyx Pty Ltd who is also on the organising Committee for International Women's Day.

What is your position and how long have you been with the University?

I have been here at the university a long time, first as a student and then employed at the Caulfield and Clayton campuses on and off since 1981, in the Library between 1981 and 1995 and then from 1998 in the Faculty of Information Technology (all as Helen Campbell). Since 2001 I have worked in Monsu and Monyx as a project manager, a learning services team member and also a student clubs mentor.

Where did you work before you came here to Monash Caulfield?

When I wasn’t working for Monash I worked for The Australian Wheat Board, Open Learning Australia and RMIT.

What is your favourite/ most inspiring quote?

‘...words that enlighten the soul are more precious than jewels.'

Hazrat Inayat Khan (a Sufi poet)

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I write and conduct ceremonies for people. I also like to draw every day, travel as frequently as time and finances allow, enjoy listening to music from opera to jazz, house and hip hop & watching motor sports and history documentaries.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Anywhere with pristine sand, a beautiful ocean, warm breezes, and great food and good and interesting people and a simple lifestyle for example Byron Bay.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

If I look back five years I could never have predicted being where I am now so to look forward five years is equally difficult to predict.  Suffice to say I hope to be still working and making a contribution in a role I enjoy, and to also be conducting a least one wedding a week and to travelling as often as I can.
