Orientation,
Welcome Breakfast, Smoking & Welcome Ceremonies
Orientation 2003 has been a great success. A free breakfast for new
students was held on Wednesday, 26 February on the Common Lawn where a few
hundred students enjoyed muffins, pastries, fruit and beverages. This was
followed by a smoking ceremony (used to cleanse a place and create a new
beginning), involving gum leaves, fire and smoke, performed by Aboriginal
elder Joy Murphy Wandin. A number of new and some current students, staff
and the Acting Mayor took part in the ceremony.
The official Welcome Ceremony took place in Chisholm
Hall and there were speeches from Academic Director, Professor Rob Willis,
Acting Mayor of the City of Glen Eira, Cr Veronika Martens and Tim Wilson,
MONSU Caulfield President. Didgeridoo player Ron Murray lead the academic
procession in and out of Chisholm Hall. Over 600 students attended the
Welcome Ceremony.
