ACCTIVE - Summer Holiday Challenge
We
have a winner!! Congratulations to Allyson Croxford who walked an
amazing 800,233 steps, which took her past Port Fairy to the South
Australian border and then back again to Portland.
Approximately 40 walkers participated in
the Summer Holiday Challenge - a virtual walk along the Victorian
Surf Coast which started on 26 December, 2004 and finished on 26 January,
2005. Walkers left the Caulfield campus and travelled through the bayside
suburbs and along the Mornington Peninsula, enjoyed New Year in Rosebud,
on to Portsea, across to Queenscliff and then on to Bells Beach, Lorne,
Apollo Bay, past the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, through
Warrnambool and arriving at Port Fairy.
23 participants reached Port Fairy and 4
walkers reached the South Australian Border and were commencing the return
journey home.
Congratulations is also extended to Lorraine
Foxall of the University Bookshop, Caulfield for reaching 2,000,000 steps
in the two challenges held to date. See campus profile for
interview.
Also worth noting, is another 12 walkers have
now walked over 1 million steps in the two Monash challenges. They
are: Aldonia Ferreira, Bill Wright, Jayne Godfrey, Jill Grogan,
Julie Parker, Kim Langfield-Smith, Lorraine Foxall, Margaret Croxford,
Martin Doulton, Lois Roberts, Paul Rake and Tracey Bloxsome.
With the 3 walkers who achieved this milestone in the Coast-to-Coast
challenge, there are now 15 members of the Monash Caulfield community who
have achieved their One Million Steps.
Congratulations to all involved, and
especially to Allyson.
The next Team Challenge - get ACCTIVE
Autumn Challenge will be starting on 20 March - a
virtual walk from Cooktown to Healesville. Start thinking of who you
would like to be in a team with and start recruiting now. Further
information will be available soon.
Invitation to the Caulfield
Campus International Women's Day Lunch
An
invitation is extended to all members of the Caulfield campus community to
attend the International Women's Day Lunch on Tuesday 8 March, 2005.
This year's speaker is Wendy Little. Here is a little bit about
Wendy
"...., Melbourne's own Rock Comedy Diva,
Wendy Little. Wendy performed her first solo show at the 2004 Melbourne
International Comedy Festival. That show, KILL BOB Volume 13, was an
outrageous evening of stand-up, sketch and foot-stomping songs and she
promises a taste of the same for us.
Wendy is also a 'SHERYL'. These comedy rock queens have performed in
five Melbourne International Comedy Festival shows, as well as the
Melbourne, Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. They have been seen
and/or heard on ABC TV, Merrick & Rosso, Triple J, the Footy Show, the
comedychannel, Channel 10, Triple J, 3RRR, and JOYFM. The Sheryls
deliver an irreverent mix of live songs, banter, improvisation and
musical parody. In 2002 The Age wrote that the Sheryls were like "The
Doug Anthony All Stars with a sex change".
Wendy says her passion is performing, but managing to squeeze this
passion into four other fulltime careers- mothering, working,
postgraduate studies and keeping a husband (her own) is an unenviable
juggling act. With all the hype about Life coaching Wendy reckons there
is business opening for Wife Coaching (but not, we suspect, of the
Surrendered Wife a la Laura Doyle kind). Wendy claims not to have slept
since 1995 when she produced her first child. She also claims that she
doesn't need to carry a purse as she has a permanent purple bag under
each eye big enough to hold her loose change. In a career stretching
back to the '80s as a barfly on "Neighbours" Wendy claims a highlight
has been performing on a 12 tonne truck covered in flannelette whilst
wearing a flannelette ballgown for the 2001 Sydney Mardi Gras. "

public holidays.

Academic Building & Car Park - Bulletin No. 4
Construction
of the new multi deck car park is nearing completion and is six months
ahead of schedule. The car park will be operational in February 2005. The
basement and the ground floor will be restricted to Area 1 permit holders.
Parking on other levels will be by way of ticket machine at hourly rates.
The fit out of the academic building will be progressively completed over
2005.
A café will
be constructed in the basement with an outdoor terrace area. The café
operator is Malatesta Corporation which also operates the STRIP café at
Clayton campus. The basement will also have four, tiered lecture theatres
ranging in capacity from 60 to 90 seats and three syndicate rooms.
Level one
has two 130 seat, tiered lecture theatres, the Graduate School of Business
shop front, a postgraduate lounge and retail outlets.
Level two
houses three tiered lecture theatres, three computer laboratories, three
large lecture theatres and nine syndicate rooms. All lecture theatres, two
of the computer laboratories and all syndicate/ seminar rooms in the
basement, levels one and two are centrally programmed spaces.
The Faculty
of Business and Economics (departments of Economics and Accounting and
Finance), will occupy levels 3 and 4 of the building. Planning for the fit
out of the Faculty of Information Technology will commence early 2005 and
they will occupy several levels. Level 10 will accommodate a conference
centre and corporate facility. There is also some space for commercial
tenants.
New Multi-Level Car Park
The
new multi level car park has now formally been handed over from
Equiset to the University. Permit holders of the new car park should
commence parking in the car park from Monday 14 February 2005. The
parking area is the Basement and Level 1. Entry to the carpark is via
Princes Avenue only (Level 1). There are two exits from the carpark -
one at Princes Avenue (Level 1) and one at Dandenong Road (Level 1).
Note that as we have just received notice on the car park, signage and
line marking still need to be completed, this will occur over the next
several days. University Pool vehicles will be parked on Level 1 in the
Yellow painted bays. Please refrain from parking in these spaces. Once
this space is clearly signed infringement notices will be issued to
vehicles parked in these spaces, the notices will not be withdrawn. It
is important for users of Pool vehicles that the vehicle booked can be
easily found in the correct parking area. Permit holders parking in Pool
vehicle space forces Pool cars to be parked elsewhere in the car park
therefore users will have to search for their vehicle.
Levels 2 to 6 should be available for ticket machine parking for
students, visitors etc from 21 February 2005.
Queens Avenue parking will be made available for Yellow permit holders
from our other campuses and some short term visitor parking and VIPS.
Staff who have received renewal notices and have not yet paid for
permits must do so by COB today, 11 February 2005. 2004 permits will be
considered invalid from Monday. Permits not renewed will be issued to
staff and students from Monday.
Parking officers will be patrolling car parks from Monday 14 February
and will issue infringements to vehicles not displaying a valid 2005
permit.
No parking will be allowed in the Quadrangle from Monday. Works relating
to refurbishment of this area will commence within the next few weeks.
Any queries can be directed to Chris Riskas extn 32212.

students aimed at academic enhancement . In first semester this
program will run on two occasions, with students being able to attend
either on Tuesdays or Thursdays. In addition, students can now enrol
on-line for SMART. Further information on this program can be found
on the community services website. The first THRIVE cycle for the
year commences on Wednesday 2nd March. Over 100 staff completed this
program last year. Limited places are still available for the first
cycle. Community Services are about to launch a Stress Clinic for
students. This drop in clinic commences on Wednesday 9th March at

Caulfield
Profiles
Lorraine
Foxall who has walked over 2,000,000 steps is profiled in this edition of
Offcourse.
What is your role here
at Monash Caulfield and how long have you been at Caulfield?
I am the Accounts Assistant for Monyx Services at the Bookshop, and have
been this for 4 years.
.
How did you become involved in the 10,000 Steps Challenge?
I thought that this would be a fun way to be involved in supporting an
important cause, and the University Community.
What was your motivation in taking up the first Challenge and how
have you maintained your motivation?
Motivation has never been a problem, as I do a large amount of
walking without realizing. I have added an extra walk around the park at
Queens Avenue before I start in the morning.
Do you feel better and/or do you find that you are more active at
work
and outside work since starting the 10,000 steps program?
I know that the walk in the park before starting work has helped, as I now
have some time to just think about what I have to do in the day.
Would, or have you encouraged others in your work area to continue
or take up the 10,000 steps program?
I have tried to encourage others to take up the challenge and did try to
encourage some of the others from here to keep at it.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time. What is that? No, only kidding. I am actively involved in
amateur theatre, where I help by the sound for some shows or I work doing
Front of House. When I am not involved in a show we go to other theatres
supporting other company members.
