Director, Monash University Prato Centre

Professor Loretta Baldassar joined Monash University in March 2009.

As Director of the Monash University Prato Centre, she is responsible for leading the development of the Prato Centre as a major Monash University hub for education, research and community engagement in Europe.

Professor Baldassar joined Monash from the University of Western Australia, where she was Associate Professor in Anthropology and Sociology. She chairs the Cassamarca lectureships committee, a key Italian Studies committee within Australia, and until early 2009 she was chair of the Australasian Centre for Italian Studies (ACIS).

Professor Baldassar's major field of research is Australian migration studies with particular focus on Italian migration. Her first book, Visits Home (Melbourne University Press 2001) won the NSW Premier's Literary Prize for Community history.

Professor Baldassar was awarded a Ph.D from the University of Western Australia in 1995.
